M to the 5th Power

What's not to like about an M5, of any generation? You have four doors, tyke-toting capability, fairly inconspicuous looks, and a sports-car destroying engine/suspension bolted in. The good folks at BMW, however, feel that we almost should have had a lightweight CSL version. After building one example, they snatched the dream away and told us all to forget about it.

Trouble is, the CSL concept is really sweet -- V10 stroked to 5.5 Liters (making about 580hp), carbon fiber air intake, and other go-faster goodies. To reduce weight, a carbon fiber roof and front seats (no rear seats) are added, along with dual-clutch 7-speed gearbox from the M3. The result is . . . well, unknown firsthand, but use your imagination here.

We might be denied this kind of fun, but just wait till the 2011 M5 arrives (these are depictions). The new 5-series already features a sleeker design, great interior and better ride, so just imagine such a machine that's quicker than the V10 to 60mph, and also delivers 30-percent better gas mileage. The heart of such amazing-ness will be a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 that cranks out 578hp and 530 torques -- over 100 more than the current M5. Audi RS6, you've been notified.

Back Streets Option

Of course, it's hard to beat an older M5, either. Our favorite is the E34, which is the last of the handbuilt BMWs. It's got the 3.5L straight-six with 310hp, but also a more modern design than the first generation. Plus, with clean examples starting at about $9K, it's great value for money.

Although there were never any "CSL" versions produced, there are several desirable upgrades to be had. While the US might have gotten more luxury options, Europe was treated to a larger 3.8L engine, 6-speed transmission, and upgraded suspension and wheels.

Not only would we add these to our budget M5, we would also seriously consider adding a twin-turbo setup as featured on the stunning 360hp Alpina B10 BiTurbo, in addition to wood and extended leather trim. That's as near a perfect car as any.
